Joe Benassi
President
Joe Benassi became involved in fundraising for MS research after his wife, Josie, was officially diagnosed with MS in October 2009. Since then, he has participated in numerous MS fundraising events — running, biking, and climbing — and has raised more than $100,000 over the past decade for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Wanting to make a more direct impact on local individuals and families living with MS, Joe connected with friend and fellow caregiver Esther Parks to launch their own nonprofit organization. In 2024, they founded MS Ability Alliance. By the end of its first year, the organization had already distributed thousands of dollars in grants, highlighting the growing need for additional support within the MS community.
Around that same time, Joe and Esther reached out to Brandon from MS is BS New England for guidance. The timing could not have been better. Brandon had successfully led the organization since he was 20 years old and was preparing to step back in order to focus on his family and business. As a result, MS Ability Alliance merged into MS is BS New England, and Joe was named President — stepping into very large shoes. Fortunately, Brandon agreed to remain involved as a board advisor, providing valuable experience and support as the organization enters its next chapter.
Professionally, Joe works full-time as a project manager, and he is grateful to have the flexibility to work remotely, allowing him to support Josie whenever needed. Outside of work, he leads MS is BS New England alongside an incredible team, participates in his company’s Disability Employee Resource Group, and recently became Treasurer of the Reading, Massachusetts Disability Commission.
Seeing firsthand the daily challenges Josie faces with MS — and the impact those challenges have on their family — continues to motivate Joe’s commitment to helping others living with MS achieve a better quality of life.
